Brunswick Project
As you enter the state of Maine, you’re greeted with signs announcing, “Welcome to Maine: The Way Life Should Be.” For the people who live here, it’s more than just a slogan; it's a way of life.
Justin and Ashley Weece have a burning passion to see the people of Maine discover a new way of life through Jesus. Throughout their marriage, they have prayed and pursued their calling to someday plant a church together where people can experience the life and love of Jesus without compromising creativity, wonder and a longing for more. After a decade of praying and pursuing their calling, God has led them to plant a church in Brunswick, ME.
In 2022, more than 15 million people visited Maine to experience the over 3,500 miles of coastline and beautiful landscape. Maine is world-renowned for its unbelievable scenery, famous Lobster, and endless outdoor opportunities. But, like many places, there is more than natural beauty here.
In 2019, the Brunswick city region ranked #2 as Barna’s "most post-Christian city in America." Pew Research reports Maine to have the second-lowest weekly church service attendance in the country. Brunswick, once marked by vibrant churches, has now become a place in desperate need of the restorative communities of God. In 2023, Maine was cited as the worst state for child abuse and neglect according to one nationwide study, as well as the third worst state for addiction, overdose, and treatment. For many in Maine, it seems that the hopeless, purposeless, and prayerless way of life isn’t working.
Brunswick is a city in the heart of the Midcoast Region that is rich in history, tradition, and natural beauty. From the historic Bowdoin College, to the tech innovators at Brunswick Landing, to the shipbuilders at Bath Iron Works, the area is a strategic hub for what we pray will be a disciple-making movement throughout the state of Maine and beyond. Justin and Ashley have a heart and a calling to the people and place of Brunswick!
Justin’s mother grew up in Brunswick as his grandfather was stationed at the Brunswick Naval Air Station. For 36 years, his parents have prayed for God to send church planters to start new Jesus-centered churches throughout the state. It was this same prayer that grew a burden in Justin and Ashley’s hearts for the people of the coast to discover transformation through Jesus. They believe God is doing something new in Maine and are excited to join the story God is crafting for the people here — the story of the way life is meant to be.
